It’s my pleasure to share with you my favorite Pilates studios in Paris, based on my own vigorous research and first-hand experience at these studios.
I’ve been a Pilates fan for over 20 years for its physical benefits, as well as a great way to reduce my stress, improve my posture, and clear my mind. It is absolutely key to my overall well-being. When I first arrived in Paris – having already practiced Pilates in Sydney for a number of years – there were very few studios in Paris. However, in recent years, its popularity has exploded! There are Pilates studios all over paris, with varying degrees of quality and attractiveness.
The challenge now is finding the best fit for you.
Before we get to my top 5 favorite Pilates studios in Paris, here is a short recap of why Pilates is an important part of my wellness journey.
Sound Mind, Sound Body
Pilates created was the brainchild of Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century as a method to help rehabilitate soldiers injured during World War 1, in England. In the 1920s, he then took it to the United States, opening a studio in New York, where his methods became popular with dancers. Centered around 6 key principles: concerntration, control, centering, flow, precision, and breathing, Pilates aims to strengthen mind and body, in harmony.
Pilates is designed to adapt to each individual’s age, fitness level, and stamina. It is also an effective rehabilitation tool when recovering from injury. Essentially, it is a low impact way to strengthen and tone your whole body, with a special focus on the core.
Mat vs Equipment
Pilates essentially comes in two formats: on a mat or on various pieces of equipment, notably Reformers, Cadillacs, Towers, Chairs, and Barrels. There is also a range of other accessories used across mat and other equipment, including elastic bands, inflatable balls, and foam rollers. In Paris, I’ve mainly seen Pilates studios offering classes that are mat-based or Reformer-based.
Personally, I like to switch between the two. Mat classes can vary in physical and cardio intensity, while Reformer classes require a different level of concerntration and application to correctly execute the movements on a moving piece of equipment. In both cases, after an hour of Pilates, I feel strong, clear-headed, and refreshed.
The key in choosing the right kind of Pilates for you, is testing them both. My advice is to go in knowing your physical limits. Always mention any injuries (old and new) to the instructor. Listen to your body and don’t push it further than you know it can go. Every person has a different physical structure, with unique strengths and weaknesses. Let yourself be encouraged by the instructor, but don’t hurt yourself.
